Inside the Vein Sclerotherapy Process

Many women are dismayed to discover spider veins on their legs. The appearance of these veins make many reluctant to wear shorts, skirts, or bathing suits, even in hot weather. Spider veins are actually dilated or enlarged capillaries, which are the fine branching blood vessels that form a network from larger vessels. They’re seen generally on the legs, although sometimes are found on the face, chest, or hands. In addition to being unsightly, spider veins can create a dull aching in the legs after prolonged standing and may even indicate a more severe problem.

Statistically, women are three times more likely to experience spider veins than men due to various factors including higher levels of the hormone progesterone. Hormone levels may be raised further during pregnancy, hormone replacement therapy or with the use of oral contraceptives. Other causes which may contribute to spider veins are obesity, smoking, occupations which require long periods of standing, sun exposure, and even wearing high heels.

Fortunately, new technology has revolutionized spider vein treatment. Varicose vein specialists now have ways to treat spider veins which are minimally invasive, with minimal discomfort and little to no recovery time required. Most vein specialists agree that sclerotherapy is the gold standard treatment for removing these embarrassing and sometimes uncomfortable spider veins.

Sclerotherapy is performed in a vein specialist’s office and provides relief from spider veins. This vein treatment not only minimizes their unsightly appearance, but can also provide relief from tired, aching, cramping, and restless legs.

Studies have shown this safe, effective treatment can eliminate as many as 50–80% of treated veins after just a few sessions. Sclerotherapy sessions are typically completed within 20 minutes per leg, and most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment.

During this procedure, a tiny needle is used to introduce an FDA-approved sclerosant into the vein, drops at a time. In a progressive pattern, the feeder veins are treated, starting from the top, moving down in a band-like pattern. This gentle, yet effective FDA approved medication causes the vein to collapse and close.  Over time, the closed vein gets absorbed by the body and disappears.  The vein specialists initiate the process and the body does the rest, naturally.
