The Symptoms and Treatment of Restless Leg Syndrome
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is characterized by uncontrollable urges to move the legs and may also include itching, burning and tingling sensations. The symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome are generally worse when lying down, are relieved by movement or walking, and sufferers may have trouble falling or staying asleep.
Another disorder known as Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PMLD) may have many different causes, but occurs in about 80% of those with restless leg syndrome. The symptoms are repetitive limb movements that occur during sleep and cause sleep disruption. These limb jerks cause frequent awakenings from sleep and can result in daytime fatigue or sleepiness.
Nearly one fourth of those with restless leg syndrome also have venous insufficiency, and recent medical research has shown that 98% of patients experienced relief from RLS symptoms, simply by treating their venous insufficiency. Venous insufficiency is when there is inadequate flow of blood through the veins most often caused by varicose veins, resulting in the blood pooling in the legs.
Fortunately, there’s restless leg syndrome relief available through modern, effective treatments for restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder. In fact, two highly effective, non-surgical treatment options are available today, including endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy.
With these treatments for restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder, there’s typically minimal discomfort, treatment is virtually painless, and most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of venous insufficiency when medically necessary.
