Tired, Aching Legs? It Could Be Venous Insufficiency

Do you often find yourself coming home and feeling like your legs are made of lead? Or perhaps there’s a dull ache in your legs that won’t subside. While sometimes increased activity can make the muscles tense up and cause these symptoms, if you feel heaviness or any sort of pain in your legs, including night cramps, on a semiregular basis, it could be a sign of an underlying condition.

A common cause of heavy legs, regardless of age, is chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), where the vein valves in your legs get damaged with time, causing blood to pool instead of flowing back to your heart. The buildup of pressure in the legs is what’s causing the discomfort and heaviness.

If you have symptoms in your legs but are unsure whether it could be a vein disease or not, read on as our experts at Goldman Vein Institute, Alexander Goldman, MD, RVT, RPVI, and Saluja Varghese, MD, RVT, RPVI, explain the signs of venous insufficiency, the risk factors, and the treatments available to make you feel better, even after a long day of standing up.

Signs of venous insufficiency

Symptoms often begin subtly, which is why many people overlook them or attribute them to general fatigue. However, as circulation becomes more impaired, these signs tend to become more frequent, noticeable, and cause more discomfort. Paying attention to early changes can help you intervene early before the condition progresses.

The sensation of heavy legs

A persistent feeling that your legs are weighted down, tired, or sluggish, even without intense physical activity. This sensation may worsen toward the end of the day or after long periods of standing or sitting.

Swelling (edema)

Swelling in the ankles, feet, or calves, often accompanied by a feeling of tightness in the skin, can also be a sign of venous insufficiency. The swelling associated with vein problems tends to get worse at the end of the day and get better after elevating the legs.

Changes in the appearance of your veins

You may notice spider veins, varicose veins, or enlarged veins. These occur as pressure builds in the veins, causing them to stretch and enlarge. The bluish color of these veins is due to blood that has pooled within them and isn’t fully oxygenated.

Skin irritation

Poor circulation in the legs can lead to increased pressure in the veins and fluid buildup in surrounding tissues. Over time, this can affect the skin, causing irritation, discoloration, or thickening. In more advanced cases, the skin may become dry, itchy, and prone to breakdown.

Venous insufficiency causes and treatments

Age, hormone changes, and long periods of sitting and standing can all contribute to venous issues. Weakening of the veins can also be caused by smoking cigarettes or a high body fat percentage.

The good news is that venous insufficiency can be managed, either through lifestyle changes, such as losing weight if necessary, wearing compression socks to boost blood flow, or elevating the legs, or through treatments that remove damaged veins and improve blood flow. So if you experience symptoms, know there are solutions.
